My First Month of Teaching

Let me tell you about the most insane, weird, and strange month of my life…

No matter what you go through in college or what you experience during your field experience hours…. you just don’t understand until you get there..

I have had to deal with things that I didn’t even think of..

There have been aggressive parents and students and lots of lessons plans that I’ve had to completely scrap because in the moment they just didn’t end up working out. I’ve had to pull lessons out of thin air at the last minute.. I’ve also had students try to walk over me and then get mad when you don’t let them.. I’ve probably graded more papers in the past month than I’ve ever completed in my academic career (which wasn’t even a real negative because I’ve got my time manage my skills down 💪🏼).

However, no matter how insane this last month of teaching has been, it has also extremely rewarding.

I’ve seen students pass quizzes and assignments that they didn’t think they could. A lot of my students have little to no self confidence, so to see their faces when they make awesome grades and surprise themselves just warms my heart ❤️

I’ve gotten to meet some of the most supportive parents who want nothing but the absolute best for their child! I’ve seen students who are struggling, work their heart out in order to pass or improve their grade.

I’ve seen new friendships form, mainly because of seating chart changes 😂, but friendships nonetheless. I’ve had students pick each other up and work out differences without having to get me involved.

I’ve also been blessed with the opportunity to work with experienced teachers on my team who have helped me when I was struggling or just plain unsure. They given me resources that they’ve created to help my students and they’ve also offer to spend their extra free time to help me if I need it.

**Just a note, always try to make a few positive calls home to parents. I did that the other day and had parents start crying because they only ever hear bad things about their students. Plus the kids come back with a smile on their faces because their parents are proud of them!**

This last month has shown me that it really is a blessing to be a teacher. We get to see all sides of the students and their parents. We get to see the real lives of these students and the struggles that they face every single day. Their are so many struggles when it comes to being a teacher. However, the benefits of being their for our students everyday outweighs the struggles of being a teacher.
